Abstract: We define a notion of zero-temperature entropy for impurities (line defects) in d + 1 space-time dimensions. We show that this entropy obeys a simple evolution equation under the renormalization group. We apply this result for impurities in magnets and in gauge theories. We find new critical impurities and phase transitions. We also discuss constraints from topology on the dynamics of defects and apply topology for the problem of spontaneous symmetry breaking and the Kondo problem in a 2+1 dimensional quantum magnet.
