  zero-temperature entropy for impurities (line defects) in d + 1 space-tim
 e dimensions. We show that this entropy obeys a simple evolution equation 
 under the renormalization group. We apply this result for impurities in ma
 gnets and in gauge theories. We find new critical impurities and phase tra
 nsitions. We also discuss constraints from topology on the dynamics of def
 ects and apply topology for the problem of spontaneous symmetry breaking a
 nd the Kondo problem in a 2+1 dimensional quantum magnet.\n
