On effective cones of rational surfaces

Abstract: Effective cones of rational surfaces have been intensively studied in the past few years, especially in the context of Nagata conjecture and Seshadri constants. After reviewing recent results on blow-ups of the projective plane at points in very general position, I will focus on blow-ups of toric surfaces at a general point, discussing examples of polyhedral and non-polyhedral effective cones. This is joint work with A-M. Castravet, J. Tevelev and L. Ugaglia.
