Non-reductive pseudo-Riemannian symmetric spaces

Abstract: We give an introduction to the structure of non-reductive pseudo-Riemannian symmetric spaces. We then recall well-known results on Lorentzian symmetric spaces of non-constant sectional curvature. Next, we focus on spaces of signature (2,n) and describe the structure of their isometry and transvection groups. Moreover, we study the existence and non-existence of compact Clifford–Klein forms. We present a complete solution to this problem in dimension four (joint work with Matti Lyko). Finally, we briefly discuss the completeness problem for compact locally symmetric spaces in this setting.
