 n\n\nAbstract\nWe give an introduction to the structure of non-reductive p
 seudo-Riemannian symmetric spaces. We then recall well-known results on Lo
 rentzian symmetric spaces of non-constant sectional curvature. Next\, we f
 ocus on spaces of signature (2\,n) and describe the structure of their iso
 metry and transvection groups. Moreover\, we study the existence and non-e
 xistence of compact Clifford–Klein forms. We present a complete solution
  to this problem in dimension four (joint work with Matti Lyko). Finally\,
  we briefly discuss the completeness problem for compact locally symmetric
  spaces in this setting.\n
