Slopes in Z_p-towers of curves

Abstract: This is an expository lecture. We shall review basic questions, results and ideas on slopes for zeta functions of curves over finite fields of characteristic p. The emphasis will be on the slope variation when the curve varies in a $Z_p$-tower.
