Abstract: Motivated by the open word problem for one-relator monoids, we study decision problems for monoids and groups. I will present some recent results (joint work with Robert D. Gray & C.-F. Nyberg-Brodda) on submonoid and rational subset membership problems in algebraic structures, and discuss their implications and connections with the word problem. Right-angled Artin groups and trace monoids play a major role in this context, and I will highlight their use in our work.
