 re held in SCI 3.05.\n\nAbstract\nMotivated by the open word problem for o
 ne-relator monoids\, we study decision problems for monoids and groups. I 
 will present some recent results (joint work with Robert D. Gray & C.-F. N
 yberg-Brodda) on submonoid  and rational subset membership problems in alg
 ebraic structures\, and discuss their implications and connections with th
 e word problem. Right-angled Artin groups and trace monoids play a major r
 ole in this context\, and I will highlight their use in our work.\n
