Abstract: In this talk, I will describe an approach that uses an auxiliary D+1-dimensional topological order, typically a topological gauge theory, to extract non-perturbative statements about the quantum phases and phase transitions realized in D-dimensional quantum systems with a fixed global symmetry structure. I will exemplify this approach for D=1 and for the case where the symmetry structure corresponds to a finite Abelian group.
