 iary D+1-dimensional topological order\, typically a topological gauge the
 ory\, to extract non-perturbative statements about the quantum phases and 
 phase transitions realized in D-dimensional quantum systems with a fixed g
 lobal symmetry structure. I will exemplify this approach for D=1 and for t
 he case where the symmetry structure corresponds to a finite Abelian group
