Abstract: In this talk, we will derive a nonlinear viscoelastic model for fibre-reinforced materials based on the kinematic assumption that the deformation gradient can be multiplicatively decomposed into viscous and elastic components, i.e., F=Fe Fv. The model is thermodynamically consistent and the evolution equation of the viscous deformation will be derived by combining suitable constitutive prescriptions with balance equations. We will show that, when external sources are absent, an Eshelbian-like torque drives the passive reorientation of the fibres. During the talk, some issues underlying the definition of anisotropic and inelastic models will be discussed, including the evolution of the symmetry group of the material response due to the inelastic relaxation. Finally, some prototype boundary value problems will be presented with the intent of highlighting the best experimental procedure to evaluate the constitutive coefficients of such a model.
