Hydro-thermo-mechanical simulation of deep geological repository of radioactive waste
Jaroslav Kruis (Department of Mechanics, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Czech Technical University)
Abstract: Possible variants of deep geological repository will be introduced. Selected engineering problems connected with the deep repositories will be summarized and the appropriate mathematical models and numerical methods for their solution will be described. The first problem is heat transfer caused by the radioactive waste in steel-based containers of length about 5 meters. The sizes of studied domain are approximately one kilometer and the investigated period is thousands of years long. A combination of suitable numerical methods has to be used in order to finish the numerical simulations in reasonable time. The second problem is thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) analysis of a system container-bentonite layer-surrounding rock massif. It is based on the balance equation of momentum, mass and energy together with various constitutive relationships. The THM analysis is formulated for 2D and 3D.
