Abstract: We review the dressing method for the construction solutions of non linear sigma models given a known solutions. Specializing in the case of the O(N) model, we show that given a solution having appropriate free parameters, it is possible to apply the dressing method systematically (i.e. without solving any equation) by taking advantage of the Pohlmeyer reduction and by rescaling the free parameters. In this context the dressing method acts as a non linear superposition rule, merging a genuine solution of the sigma model with a "virtual" one.
