Abstract: Andrew Ogg gave a geometric description of the primes that divide the order of the monster finite simple group in 1973, and thus initiated the theory of monstrous moonshine. Since then, the pursuit of moonshine has illuminated powerful relationships between algebraic, geometric and number theoretic structures. We will present an introductory overview of this theory.
