Abstract: In this talk I'll present a proposal for a string realization of the SYK model as the world-line theory of Q FZZT branes in (p,1) minimal string theory. Starting from the two-matrix model description of the minimal string, I show that the FZZT brane partition function takes the form of a matrix version of the SYK model. I'll then describe how time emerges upon taking the continuum limit. I'll briefly comment on possible implications of our result for the string dual interpretation of the SYK model and for the role of ensemble averaging in low dimensional holography.
