Abstract: Date: November 4, 2026 (Wednesday) at 12:00 (noon) UK time
Speaker: Prof. Van Vu, The University of Hong Kong, China
Topic: Current directions in random matrix theory
About the Talk: Prof. Van Vu is a leading mathematician whose work has made major contributions to probability, combinatorics, and random matrix theory. He is particularly known for fundamental results on the eigenvalues and invertibility of random matrices, including influential work on universality and the circular law. In this talk, he will give an accessible overview of some current directions in random matrix theory. He will discuss the remarkable phenomenon that many spectral properties of large random matrices are largely independent of the precise distribution of their entries. The talk will highlight some of the recent developments, open questions, and connections of the subject with combinatorics, probability, statistics, and data science. See the blog announcement functor.network/user/3333/entry/2016 of this talk for more details.
