Abstract: There is a remarkable relationship between integrable systems in 1+1 dimensions (such as the Heisenberg spin chain) and a certain quantum gauge theory in four dimensions often referred to as four-dimensional Chern-Simons Theory. I will review aspects of this relationship and then describe some newer results involving holomorphic surface defects in this gauge theory and their relationship to the Bethe equations governing spin chains.
