Abstract: In this talk, we will discuss the topology of Kawamata log terminal singularities. We show that from the perspective of the fundamental group klt singularities are close to quotient singularities. For instance, the regional fundamental group of a klt singularity of dimension n contains a normal abelian subgroup of rank at most n and index at most c(n). Then, we proceed to study geometric implications of the topology of klt singularities. We give a characterization theorem in the case that the abelian part of the fundamental group is large of full rank.
