Periods of elliptic surfaces

Abstract: The derivative of the period map for elliptic surfaces has a description in terms of where the j-invariant ramifies. This leads to a natural orthonormal basis of the (1,1) part of the primitive cohomology, expressed in terms of meromorphic 2-forms of the 2nd kind, and to a generic Torelli theorem. This extends to certain other families of varieties fibred in Calabi-Yau varieties.
