Abstract: Drinfeld Modules: An Introduction

Drinfeld modules were introduced in the 1970's by Vladimir Drinfeld, and have since played a crucial role in the resolution of many important problems in number theory, especially those in the Langlands program. I will discuss some of the history and basics of Drinfeld modules, concentrating on the work of Leonard Carlitz from the 1930's.

This is the first talk of a series of two talks, and it will be entirely expository. The only prerequisite is some knowledge of abstract algebra. In these two talks, I intend to cover some of the material in Sections 5.4, 7.1, 7.3 of the attached (preliminary) textbook on the subject.
