 l Colloquium\n\n\nAbstract\nDrinfeld Modules: An Introduction\n\nDrinfeld 
 modules were introduced in the 1970's by Vladimir Drinfeld\, and have sinc
 e played a crucial role in the resolution of many important problems in nu
 mber theory\, especially those in the Langlands program. I will discuss so
 me of the history and basics of Drinfeld modules\, concentrating on the wo
 rk of Leonard Carlitz from the 1930's.\n\n This is the first talk of a s
 eries of two talks\, and it will be entirely expository. The only prerequi
 site is some knowledge of abstract algebra. In these two talks\, I intend 
 to cover some of the material in Sections 5.4\, 7.1\, 7.3 of the attached 
 (preliminary) textbook on the subject.\n
