Ranks of Jacobians over rational numbers

Abstract: The problem of finding out the possible Mordell-Weil ranks of abelian varieties of given dimension over a fixed number field has a long history. In this talk we shall survey various results which have appeared over the years bounding from below the maximal rank that those varieties can have, with particular emphasis on Jacobians of special families of curves over the field of rational numbers.
