Abstract: In the 1980s Koiso showed that only 5 types of compact irreducible symmetric space admit infinitesimal Einstein deformations; he also developed an obstruction to such deformations being integrable to second order but left the calculation of this obstruction on these spaces open. I will report on work of the last few years that computes the obstruction on these spaces and what this says about the rigidity of compact irreducible symmetric spaces. This is joint work with Wafaa Batat, Thomas Murphy, Paul Schwahn, Uwe Semmelmann, and James Waldron.
