An Introduction to 2-Group Global Symmetry

Abstract: I will briefly review the generalization of ordinary global symmetries to higher-form symmetries (which act on extended objects) in quantum field theory. I will then showcase simple but surprising examples in 4d and 6d where ordinary and 1-form global symmetries are necessarily fused together into a higher structure known as a 2-group. Time permitting, I will discuss some applications to superconformal theories in 6d.
