Abstract: Today's quantum computers almost exclusively follow the binary paradigm of their classical predecessor. Yet, the applications for such devices, most notably the simulation of physics and chemistry, often do not fit this paradigm. Natural systems come in a variety of spin dimensions and rarely have just two possible states. Quantum processors that natively support multi-level, qudit, operation give us a new tool for addressing the challenge of simulating nature efficiently. I will discuss qudit quantum computing with trapped ions at the example of first quantum simulations with relevance to high-energy physics.
