Abstract: In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study the holographic dual of a topological symmetry operator. We argue that the bulk counterpart of such an operator has a non-topological worldvolume action, i.e., it describes a dynamical object. Our argument will be bottom up, without reference to a top down construction, and rely on smearing properties of entanglement wedge reconstruction and holographic RG flows. Further, we will compare to earlier work by Harlow and Ooguri on the absence of global symmetries in asymptotically AdS spacetimes. Finally, we comment on stringy versions of various results. This talk is based on joint work with J. J. Heckman and C. Murdia.
