NOTE UNUSUAL TIME: The Symmetry Breaking Long Exact Sequence
Ryan Thorngren (UCLA)
Abstract: Fractional or anomalous degrees of freedom at domain walls and vortices have been an important topic in physics for 50 years. In this talk, we will look at these localized modes from a new point of view, and study the matching problem between them and the gapped bulk modes. We will touch on recent ideas like higher Berry phase and discuss an interacting version of the Callias index theorem. The talk is based on the work of my wonderful collaborators, Arun Debray, Sanath K. Devalapurkar, Cameron Krulewski, Yu Leon Liu, and Natalia Pacheco-Tallaj, which you can find here arxiv.org/abs/2309.16749 .
