Abstract: We discuss the geometry of the Gelfand-Zeitlin integrable systems on the complex general linear and orthogonal Lie algebras. We show how geometric invariant theory and the theory of spherical varieties can be used to understand the fibres of the moment maps of these systems and discuss possible applications to the study of Gelfand - Zeitlin modules.
