Drinfeld's construction of Hecke eigensheaf for GL_2.

Abstract: In 1982, Drinfeld constructed an automorphic form on $\mathrm{GL}_2$ for every irreducible rank-$2$ local system on a curve over a finite field, satisfying the Hecke eigenproperty. His construction is purely geometric and launched what is today known as the geometric Langlands program. In this talk, I will review the early history of the geometric Langlands program and explain Drinfeld's original argument.
