On torsion in the cohomology of Hilbert modular varieties

Abstract: We discuss ongoing joint work with Ana Caraiani concerning vanishing results for the generic part of the cohomology of Hilbert modular varieties. A key ingredient is a comparison of the fibres of the Hodge-Tate period maps attached to different quaternionic Shimura varieties, inspired by the description of their Goren-Oort stratification given by Tian-Xiao.
