Terrestrial Aurora: Laboratory for plasma processes in Space/Astrophysics
Ilan Roth (University of California Space Sciences, Berkley)
Abstract: Terrestrial Aurora, being a small unit of the solar system, serves as unique laboratory of magnetized plasma. It forms a striking example of electrodynamic connection between Earth and Sun, being anchored in the ionosphere and affected by the magnetosphere. I will present the basic structure of the Earth environment, show simple examples of various observed auroras and sketch the process in which particular interaction between electromagnetic waves and plasma particles at Earth may solve some old puzzles of acceleration of He isotopes, with implication on solar physics, anomalous abundances in meteorites at the beginning of the solar system and at the planetary nebulae observed at the termination of stellar life.
