Abstract: Nichols algebras appear in various areas of mathematics, ranging from Hopf algebras and quantum groups to Schubert calculus and conformal field theory. Originally introduced in the 1970s through the work of Nichols, they have been rediscovered multiple times, maybe because they appear in several different contexts. In this introductory talk, I will review the basic concepts and outline the main challenges involved in classifying Nichols algebras over groups. In particular, I will discuss some recent classification theorems, highlighting a result obtained in collaboration with Andruskiewitsch and Heckenberger concerning finite-dimension.
