Abstract: I will discuss recent results showing that a finite volume real or complex hyperbolic manifold with infinitely many maximal totally geodesic submanifolds is arithmetic. The proof brings together homogeneous dynamics and a new superrigidity theorem. [This is joint work with Bader, Miller and Stover.]
