Abstract: The Hardy space $H^2$ made its way into signal theory since Wiener's time, and it belongs to the standard toolbox of all engineers who deal with signals. We will see how $H^2$ and its related function spaces $H^1$, $H^\infty$, and $BMOA$ arise from basic practical problems, and how multiplication, Toeplitz, and Hankel operators enter the picture. Feedback systems will take us at the front step of Pick interpolation. The aim is advertising a possible intuition of a beautiful chapter of pure mathematics.
