A family of threefolds with several unusual features

Abstract: I will discuss some of the unusual properties, in geometry and physics, of a family of Calabi-Yau threefolds fibered by elliptic curves. I will compare it to a construction by Elkies and a classical results of Burkhardt. This leads to some open questions.
