Abstract: Certain infinite variable polynomial rings equipped with actions of large groups (like the infinite symmetric group or the infinite general linear group) behave in many ways like finitely generated algebras; for instance, one sometimes has an "equivariant noetherian" property. I will discuss some deeper parallels with commutative algebra, and how these somewhat exotic objects can be applied to study classical questions.
