Metacognition and Mindset: Keys to Igniting Student Success in Mathematics

Saundra McGuire (Louisiana State University)

Tue Jan 27, 17:00-18:00 (3 days ago)

Abstract: All students who are enrolled in college courses have the ability to succeed. However, most undergraduate mathematics students do not have effective learning strategies, and they resort to memorizing formulas and solutions to specific problems just before tests. Additionally most view homework as a task to complete and submit, not as a learning tool. This interactive webinar will introduce faculty to cognitive science researchbased learning strategies that will help all students experience meaningful, transferable learning. The session will focus on ways to teach students simple yet powerful learning strategies to ensure success in mathematics courses in particular and STEM courses in general.
