Discriminants of polynomial systems
Vladislav Pokidkin
Abstract: The space of all systems of polynomial equations with prescribed Newton polytopes contains the discriminant - the set of all systems with a degenerate root. The study of such discriminants (so called A-discriminants) was initiated by Gelfand, Kapranov, Zelevinsky and Sturmfels in 1990th. We make a review of existing results about the structure of discriminants and provide a conjecture about its number of irreducible components and their codimensions for tuples of Newton polytopes with positive mixed volume.
