Full GR simulations of stellar compact binary mergers: from GW170817 to GW190814.
Milton Ruiz (Illinois U., Urbana)
Abstract: Stellar Compact object mergers are not only important sources of gravitational waves but also central engines that power electromagnetic transients and r-processes, if matter is involved. I will review recent progress modeling the merger of black hole-neutron star and neutron stars binaries highlighting state-of-the-art general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations. In particular, I focus on the effort to establish these systems as viable progenitors of short-hard gamma ray bursts and understanding their role in triggering the r-process. We use the predictions of these numerical simulations to impose constraints on the nature of GW170817 and GW190814.
