Abstract: I will explain the idea of categorification, which is the process of replacing notions like "equality" with "equivalence". We will see that this naturally leads us to consider spectra, the central objects of study in stable homotopy theory. We will conclude by introducing the chromatic picture of spectra, and explaining what categorification has to say in this context. (No previous knowledge of homotopy theory will be assumed.)
