Vanishing of Ext modules and characterizations of smoothness in algebraic varieties

Abstract: In this talk, after presenting some homological results which establish freeness criteria for modules, I will discuss how the vanishing of suitable Ext modules can be translated in terms of smoothness of a complex algebraic variety at a given point. Special attention will be given, e.g., to complete intersections and rational surface singularities.
