A Winding Journey Through Mathematical Thought (series unlisted)
Andrew Will
Abstract: We often hear about thinking mathematically, but what does this actually mean? In this talk, we will peer into the mathematical toolkit by looking at a surprising proof of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra, the result of which states that every nonzero polynomial has a number of complex roots matching its degree. We'll see how this proof full of twists and turns employs three fundamental tools of mathematical thought: abstraction, reduction, and isomorphism.
