Abstract: Bialynicki-Birula decomposition is a powerful tool for analysing a smooth variety with a torus action. In the talk, I will discuss it and recent developments: the generalization to singular varieties and its applications, as well as an analogue of BB decomposition for additive group actions. This last generalization, which is connected to Carrell's rationality conjecture and formal algebraic PDEs, offers several open questions.
