Abstract: We present a dynamical framework giving rise to many classical sequences in number theory and algebraic combinatorics. We show that every such sequence is either preperiodic or satisfies a certain height gap condition. As applications, we obtain results concerning D-finite power series and a weak version of Dynamical Mordell-Lang. This is based on joint work with Jason Bell, Dragos Ghioca, and Fei Hu.
