  framework giving rise to many classical sequences in number theory and al
 gebraic combinatorics. We show that every such sequence is either preperio
 dic or satisfies a certain height gap condition. As applications\, we obta
 in results concerning D-finite power series and a weak version of Dynamica
 l Mordell-Lang. This is based on joint work with Jason Bell\, Dragos Ghioc
 a\, and Fei Hu.\n
