A fractal paradox on how to measure: From coastlines to stochastic processes

Wed Jan 28, 15:30-16:00 (2 days ago)

Abstract: How long is a coastline? The inconvenient truth is that it depends on your ruler. Beginning with this paradox, we take a relaxed tour of fractal geometry, moving from tidy deterministic fractals like Cantor sets and Sierpiński triangles to the much rougher random fractals that arise in stochastic processes.
