Abstract: In this talk I will give a general introduction to machine learning for math students, with a focus on the statistical foundations. We will discuss supervised and unsupervised learning, some examples of commonly used models, such as linear and logistic regression, decision trees, and deep neural networks. We will go over training and evaluation methods, bias versus variance, and the bootstrap. We will also discuss common application areas.
