Abstract: Starting with the famous Lewkowycz-Maldacena derivation of the Ryu-Takayanagi formula, the replica trick has played a central role in teaching us about entanglement and entropy in quantum gravity. I will review these ideas, showing how a semiclassical analysis leads to the quantum extremal surface prescription, entanglement wedge reconstruction, and eventually to the recent derivations of the Page curve in evaporating black holes.
