Abstract: The aim of the talk is to present some recent results on critical exponents for discrete subgroups of higher rank semisimple Lie groups. We will survey classical results in negative curvature, the relationship with entropy and the Hausdorff dimension of limit sets. Then we will introduce the geometric properties of higher rank symmetric spaces and explain the main differences with strict negative curvature. We will focus on two different results : the behaviour of the critical exponent under normal subgroup (j.w. S. Tapie) and the extension of classical results to pseudo-riemannian geometry (j.w. D. Monclair).
