On the signature of the Ricci curvature on nilmanifolds

Abstract: In this talk we will explain the solution to the following problem: Given an arbitrary nilpotent Lie group, determine all possible signatures of the Ricci curvature of left invariant metrics on it. The solution involves constructing invariant metrics with many zeros in their Ricci curvature, for which we use ideas from GIT, and then an Implicit function theorem argument.
